Study Buddies

Study Buddy/After School Peer Tutoring at Monta Vista High
Monta Vista High School offers an after-school peer-tutoring program. Potential tutees must qualify to participate in this program, with the primary goal of supporting students in the subjects of Math and/or English. If a student needs help in another subject area, this can also usually be supported. This is a state-funded program.

There are several ways a potential tutee may qualify:
  • The student received a D, F or I in Math and/or English
  • The student earned a low STAR score in Math and/or English (40% or below basic)
  • The student did not pass the HSEE
  • The student is a senior who does not meet graduation requirements
  • The student is in ELD and needs support in ANY subject

Tutors are volunteer Monta Vista students who offer their time and expertise to tutor fellow Monta Vista students at no charge. SBS is a structured program:
  • Sessions are from 3:15 to 4:15, two days a week
  • Students can choose a Mon/Wed schedule or a Tues/Thurs schedule
  • Students commit for a full semester (not a drop-in program)
  • Sessions are hosted on the MV campus and monitored by MV host teachers
  • Attendance will be taken and students are expected to come prepared with appropriate text books to each session
  • Illness is the only accepted reason for an excused absence. If a student has more than 2 unexcused absences, or consistently comes ill-prepared, they will be asked to leave the program
  • Most students concentrate on homework in subject areas where they are having difficulty. However, tutors can also help students prepare for the High School Exit Exam.

To apply for this program, students must complete the
Tutoring Application and Contract. This form is also available in the SBS Tutoring Office. The number of available tutors is usually limited. Therefore, students will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at any time, at: seema_tandon@fuhsd.org.
